I HAVE A LOT OF MISTLETOE IN MY TREES. WHAT IS MISTLETOE?

Although mistletoe has a long history associated with traditions representing peace and romance, it’s definitely not pleasant for the tree that’s infested with it!  Mistletoe is a parasitic plant that makes its own nutrients from the photosynthesis process; however, it grows into the tree’s wood and siphons the minerals and water right out of the tree.  When you first observe that you have mistletoe growing in your tree, contact an experienced tree company!

SOME OF MY TREES WITH MISTLETOE DON’T LOOK GOOD. IS MISTLETOE BAD FOR A TREE?

When you have mistletoe professionally removed in the early stages of the infestation, there won’t be much harm done to your tree.  Mistletoe must be removed by an experienced tree company because if it’s not done safely and correctly, your prized tree may be damaged.  Don’t put this off!  Without professional removal, mistletoe will continue to spread through your infested tree.  If you don’t take care of this issue as soon as you notice it, the mistletoe will spread quickly through all of your trees on your outdoor residential grounds.  Because the mistletoe seed is transported by birds, you can imagine how quickly the mistletoe will spread!

WHAT CAUSES MISTLETOE IN MY TREES?

Birds enjoy feasting on the mistletoe.  As the birds fly around your residential grounds, the mistletoe seed is deposited by the birds on the tree branches.  Unless you have it professionally removed by an experienced tree company, it will continue to multiply and take over your trees!

CAN MISTLETOE KILL MY TREE?

It certainly can!  Without proper treatment and removal of the mistletoe, your valuable tree most likely won’t survive.  Mistletoe is an unsightly tree predator that impacts your tree’s health in a negative way.  It will continue to suck the water and nutrients from the tree and cause your tree to be stressed and weakened.  Trees that have been subjected to stress and are weakened become vulnerable to other tree diseases and infestation from insect pests.  As mistletoe growth spreads, you’ll notice dead, broken branches and branches falling.  Extreme weather conditions, as we experience here in Fort Worth, Texas, will cause your tree to become even more vulnerable to diseases.  When you first notice that your mistletoe-infested tree is exhibiting signs of a sick tree, contact the best arborist in Fort Worth, Texas!

CAN I REMOVE IT MYSELF?

Don’t try to remove mistletoe yourself and definitely don’t hire an unskilled contract worker!  Better put, just don’t do it!  Climbing trees and using proper equipment is a dangerous job!  Safety comes first with us!  Proper equipment and safety gear must be used; otherwise, you risk your own health and safety and the safety of your home and all those around you.  Always contact a tree care specialist when you first notice that mistletoe is growing in your trees!
